Podiatric Awareness for Children Campaign Released by APMA

iStock_000007379578XSmallThe American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) is campaigning to bring awareness to the general public about how important children’s feet need to be consistently maintained. The campaign, titled ‘First Steps: Keeping Children’s Feet Healthy and Happy’, emphasizes the role podiatrists play in the foot care field.

“It’s important that parents pay close attention to children’s feet even before they start to walk, beginning at birth and continuing as they take their first steps, go to school, and participate in sports.” said APMA President Frank Spinosa.

For any parent, it’s important to keep a child’s feet healthy.  If your child is experiencing pain or difficulty in his or her foot or ankle, see podiatrist Dr. Mark Landry of Kansas. Dr. Landry can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Keeping Children’s Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

  • Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
  • Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should usually be worn
